Exhibition

On the afternoon of May 28, 2019, Eternal Modernity - \"Architectural Poet\" Wang Dahong Memorial Exhibition was officially opened in Red Dot Design Museum Xiamen. In memory of the 100th anniversary of Bauhaus and the 50th anniversary of man’s landing on the moon, Wang Da-Hong Architectural Research and Conservation Society cooperated with Red Dot Design Museum Xiamen, and launched this annual special exhibition. It is also the first time that the modern Chinese master architect, Wang Dahong’s works are exhibited on a large scale in China. Wang Dahong (1917-2018), graduated from Department of Architecture at the University of Cambridge, England, and Harvard Graduate School of Design, USA. He took lessons from Walter Gropius, the first principal of Bauhaus and pioneer of modernism design, and received a formal education of Bauhaus together with I.M.Pei and Philip Johnson. He also absorbed the architectural language of Ludwig Mies Van der Rohe, the third principal of Bauhaus, which had a significant influence on Wang’s later exploration of his personal style. The penetration and fluidity of Mies\'s space successfully inspired his attempts at Chinese modern dwellingss. Harvard University PhD degree in Urban Planning, president of Wang Da-Hong Architectural Research and Conservation Society, Mr. Hua Changyi commented: “Mr. Wang is generally recognized as an architectural poet - (a phrase borrowed from Xu Mingsong’s book title). It is saying that, all the buildings he designed have a special state of mind. But it can also be said the other way around: he’s not only versatile but also a poet, so that he could express himself by architecture.” Wang Dahong created more than a hundred works in his lifetime. The majority of them are private houses and public buildings delegated by the government. The peak of his creation is in the 1960s and 1970s, and his famous representative works include Taipei Palace Museum, Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, Moon Landing Monument, etc. This exhibition is divided into three themes: “Bauhaus Education”, “Traditional Modernity”, and “Silence and Seclusion”. Through models, architectural drawings, photos, books and videos, it introduces dozens of Wang Dahong’s important works, showing the audience his exploration and practice of modern Chinese architecture in a comprehensive way. The opening day of this exhibition is the first anniversary of Mr. Wang Dahong\'s passing away. Red Dot Design Museum Xiamen hopes to commemorate this eternal architectural poet through this exhibition, and pays tribute to his life-long dedication to the integration of Chinese and western cultures. Meanwhile, on the 100th anniversary of Bauhaus, the exhibition intuitively interprets Bauhaus\'s modernism design style of “experimental, diverse, cross-boundary and completely contemporary\" through Wang Dahong’s works, in memory of the world\'s first college established completely for the development of modern design education.
